Although the Star Trek with which were are familiar is set in the future, “Calypso” goes far beyond what we’ve seen before—a thousand year far. Once merely a starship computer, Zora has spent the past millennium becoming sentient. Meanwhile, Craft was a fighting in a war away from his family and was dangerously injured. They are the only characters we see, who find and save each other in a beautifully told story of companionship and love.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss the second episode of Star Trek: Short Treks: “Calypso.” We question the reality of an AI system and her compassion for Craft. We also deliberate the moral issues surrounding their relationship. When it turns into more, is the emotional love considered cheating? And with no mention of the crew, Starfleet, or the Federation, can this episode really be considered Star Trek or is it just a really good SF short story?
